We need foster carers to keep children safe

There are around 13,500* children and young people in out-of-home care in NSW, yet there are only 5,000 authorised carer households.

Uniting is proud to partner with children, young people, carers and families to create safe and supportive homes where children can heal and thrive.

We're striving to do things better

Together, we build networks of belonging – where every carer can feel deeply supported, every family can stay connected, and every child can be surrounded by a lifelong village.

Listening to the voices of children and young people.

Helping children and young people find and achieve their dreams.

Greater transparency for carers about how decisions are made.

Increasing carer allowances so carers can meet the needs of children in their care.

How we see, find and engage with family

A sense of identity, belonging and being loved unconditionally, are essential to a child’s health, development and dignity.

We help build a child's network for life – wrapping communities around children to keep them safe, nurture them, and honour their relationships with family.

Could you become a foster carer?

Yes, you can. Let's bust some of the most common myths and misconceptions that may be holding you back from taking on this rewarding role.

"I don't have enough time"

With our flexible fostering options, you could start by offering respite care for a day, a night, a weekend or a month.

"I'm single and live alone"

If you can offer a stable and nurturing home, you can make a world of difference in a child's life.

There are other ways to help. Let's talk through the different types of care available, so we can find something to suit you.

"We're a couple in a same-sex relationship"

It takes all kinds of people to support all kinds of children. At Uniting, we always welcome everyone exactly as they are.

Could you care for me?

"Hi, I'm Charlie – I'm curious, caring and playful."

Charlie is 12 years old and urgently needs a home. He’s in Year 6 at school and loves science experiments, swimming lessons, art classes, and understanding how things work.

He doesn’t want to keep worrying about where he’ll live, or who he can count on. Could you be the person who’s there for him?

Connecting to kin, culture and country

We're deeply committed to the transfer of Aboriginal children and young people to Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and work actively with our ACCO colleagues to achieve this positive and necessary change.

While this transition progresses, we continue to provide culturally-supportive, community‑led foster and kinship care that prioritises connection to family, culture and country.
